Plate Tectonics
Plate Tectonics is a scientific Theory that describes the large scale motions of Earths Lithosphere . The theory builds on the concept of continental drift developed during the first decades of the 20th century and accepted by the majority of the Geo-scientific community when the concept of sea floor spreading were developed in between the 1950s and 1960s.
Basically three types of plate boundaries exist with a fourth mixed type characterized by the way plates move relative to each other. The Lithosphere is broken up into tectonic plates. On Earth there are 7 Tectonic Plates they are
-African plate
-Antarctic Plate
-Eurasian plate
-Indo-Australian plate -North American plate
-Pacific Plate
-South American Plate
The Plates are always travelling. They travel a couple of cm a year. The edges of the Plates, where they move against each other, are sites of intense geological activity, and they also create volcanoes, earthquakes and mountains. It is now informally agreed that the crustal plates move horizontally. The Continents drift slowly, but that they drift at all is amazing.
